There is growing interest in the use of marijuana as medicine. Marijuana contains cannabinoids and the human body makes its own cannabinoids called endocannabinoids (eCBs). Both marijuana-cannabinoids and endocannabinoids activate two types of cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) CB1R (CNR1) and CB2R (CNR2). CB2Rs are induced and enhanced in brain disorders associated with inflammation such as in addiction, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Activation of CB2R has anti-inflammation function by inhibiting microglia proliferation and promoting neurogenesis

Cx3cr1-Cnr2 mice were produced by crossing Cnr2-flox mice with Cx3cr1-Cre mice. The microglia specific deletion of CB2R were verified by genotyping and in situ hybridization. Cx3cr1-Cnr2 mice are invaluable mouse models to study neurodegenerative diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease.
